Not that its nescessarily noted for the classic RIC tone, but may I also reccomend you listen to "Going for the one" . Their best album from start to finish IMHO.armybass wrote:Thanks for the headsup.....I will give those a spin too!jps wrote:Their first and second albums rock out, too, with a slightly different, grittier RM1999 tone that is wonderful all it's own.
What recordings do you listen to when you wanna hear a Ric?

"Listen to the Flower People " from Spinal Tap

Nice, Peter! And it wasn't until now that I noticed ST's historical error with the 4001. The "TV appearance" was supposed to be in 1967, but Shearer's bass is a '73 or '74.

Funny this thread resurrection made me go back over it,and i realized i didn't even mention Chris Squire in my original post. Maybe too obvious, but He is the reason i got into Ric basses in the first place,so pretty much any of his solo or group recordings would be at the forefront of my list. Gates of delerium and i am a camera are 2 great examples of what he does best, and how the RM brings that out. I do have to admit that isolated track of roundabout doesn't sound all that great (try listening to some of Macca's isolated tracks, even on some of my favorite basslines,it doesn't sound so hot by itself-not what is being played, mind you, just the recorded sound). Taken into the context of how it fits in final recording,or live, the way the bass line in roundabout sounds is fantastic. And the remark about " every kid in guitar center having a shot" was uncalled for,Chris is truly one of the top innovators in the history of the bass guitar, period.

Heh heh. I'm with you, Woody. But that's the great thing about opinions - everybody's got one, even if it's negatively biased. Usually though, people on the RRF are actually FANS of the artists featured.woodyng wrote:the remark about "every kid in guitar center having a shot" was uncalled for; Chris is truly one of the top innovators in the history of the bass guitar, period.
I love the isolated track. I don't find flaw with Squire' playing at all. He's not striving for delicately executed perfection; he's hammering the living #### out of that bass! Much in the way that Keith Moon was wailing away on the intro of 'Teenage Wasteland' - his kick-foot is all over the place, but the energy of his playing makes the hair on my arms stand up every time. I didn't realize how hard Squire was hitting those strings until I heard this track solo'd. And given his high energy, he's still nailing the classic pull-off riff of the verses pretty dang consistently.

Incidentally Scott - an album definitely worth mentioning again if you don't already have it, the 'Yessongs' live album. Out of all the live Yes albums there are, Squire's tone is my fave on this one. Absolutely killer. And most of the material is from the 3 aforementioned Yes studio albums, including ALL of Close To The Edge.
~AND~ (how could I forget) it has Squire's 10+ minute long bass-solo version of The Fish.

Agreed Mark, YesSongs is where I go for THE sound! There are other offerings but that is the jam packed full album there is for all aspects of the sound.

I love a lot of British sixties bands and because of that Rvoli's and EB2's. But in saw also a lot of pics of Kinks, Who and Pink Floyd with Ricky-basses which look awesome. The look was always a big thing for me. And the I discovered The Jam, but of course also John Deacon on some pics, Lemmy, Genesis.
BTW: I'm around six feet tall. My guitar player asked me last week which model I got, cos he never saw such a small and short scale Rick. The 'small and short scale Rick was in fact the 4001. I told him people were smaller in the 60s;)

Machine Head, specifically the bass break in Pictures of Home, as that caught my ear when I was about nine years old. Roger Glover's playing at times almost sounds sinister to my ears. Of course, all Yes albums listed and anything early Rush, also Starcastle's 1st record - I put that CD in about twice a year, been meaning to pick up more from those guys.
Also later Beatles, although my love for their music is on such a level that I rarely, if ever, find myself wondering what guitars are in use. I just love their music. Beatles and the Moody Blues are probably the only two bands I can listen to without dissecting the sound. Even classical, as an arranger / composer myself, I analyze everything in the arrangement. It's like a curse that I'm sure many here can attest to having to deal with while listening.
As for the comment on the isolated Roundabout track, yea Woody, I agree, uncalled for but some folks just have to take their shots. Any way, that must be some Guitar Center where those kids are hanging out. Surely they'll all soon be discovered and have record deals if they are truly that innovative, talented and musical. As a progressive rock fan, I always appreciate new stuff, so I'll keep my ears open - Where is this GC anyway, Vienna?

Cool stuff, Aaron. I had forgotten about Kira. Loves me some Mike Watt, too. I know her usual Rick, but that is one tripped out bass she's playing in DOS - 'Number 8'
What looks like a single-pickup Rickish body with a ton of switches & knobs and a Fender Tele Bass neck/headstock. Bizarre! Would be interesting to get the dirt on that bass.
Funny to see young Rollins, too.
Was never familiar with the Om & Sleep stuff, cool to discover. I like that fat fuzz that Cisneros had going on.

IIRC it was made by Garz Guitars and it's not the only one they made for her. I think there is a white one also. I'm positive RIC has been aware of these.walker wrote:What looks like a single-pickup Rickish body with a ton of switches & knobs and a Fender Tele Bass neck/headstock. Bizarre! JETGLO should officially be renamed JETGLO ROCKS!
