Go for some variety, get a Ruby and MID 4004, one in each version, L and Cii!

C64? V63? These are the reissued vintage "s" type basses, which are currently not in production,so you could look for one in the used market,as well as a 4003S,4000,or 4001S. Of course, the 4004 series is sort of the new "s",albeit with a more modern, simplified bridge, electronics,no front routing covered by plastic, etc.

Yes sir the C64 V63's are what I am after....but to be honest I do not know the difference between the two...but basically I am looking to get a Squire/McCartney/Rutherford type of unbound, dot inlayed 4001. Sorry to hear that they are no longer in production but it takes some of the pressure off of me to score one in the near future

I've always wondered how people with multiple instances of the same guitar choose which one to play. . . Do you have a particular favorite out of the three?

If those were mine, the Maple would be getting some flatwounds post-haste.

Nice score btw:)

Very nice to have 3 4003 Rics in different finishes if you can afford it mate, well done! :D

Personally though, it isn't something I would want to do, yes I would love another bass to accompany my 4001 JG but it would have to be another model such as a 4003 in a different finish and not the same model.

You are the perfect candidate for a 4004 model, as a 4003 is too close to your 4001 to really be a different model IMHO. To me it (the 4003) is more a later variation (of the 4001) with some new details on it.

Possibly (if you can find a lefty one), however as a lefty the 4003's are quite a bit different to the 4001 model than the right hand version, here is why I would go for one;

1. Improved neck strength on the 4003 (no worries about string gauges etc).
2. A proper lefty neck with the m.o.p. inlays the correct way round.
3. A proper lefty headstock with the shaping the correct way round and the t.r.c. the correct way round.
4. The more 'slinkier' upper body horn.
5. Adjustable High Gain pickups (which are more powerful as well).
6. The finish and build quality on the latest 4003's looks superb - especially the Mapleglo which is what I would go for.
7. 'Whiter' and more distinct m.o.p. inlays (the one's on my 4001 are almost ivory in color).
8. The overall satisfaction of having a 'true' left hand instrument.
9. The push-pull Vintage Tone option on the Treble control.

I do believe three!! Congrats on your new aquisition! No JG here, but have been thinking that blue or white would be a nice addition. Ya need to have contrast.... 8)

Sorry I missed this question..... but yes I do have a method to my madness. I gig weekly in my regular band wich tunes down to Eb so I have the JG tuned down with Rotosound Rounds and the FG is tuned down with LaBella flats tht I use the first set wich is an acoustic guitar set..fits it better.

In addition to my regular gig, I get multiple calls monthly to do fill in work or possibly work with groups I have worked with in the past and these gigs are all standard tuning so I leave the MG tuned to E in a double gig bag with my 75 RI Jazz.

So in honesty if I could get another 4003 that I could put flats on and leave it tuned to E I would probably put the jazz in the case for a considerable time.....:0)
