How long did Mike Rutherford play Ric basses in Genesis?

Post by armybass »

I have recently gotten turned onto the classic Genesis quintet albums and love Mike Rutherfords tasteful playing. Just curious if he played mainly Rics and if anyone knows what years he played them and on what recordings?

He played Ricks, Microfrets and Shergold instruments, maybe others too, that I don't recall.

Excellent... I have purchased all but Genesis to Revelation this week. And there is quite a tonal jump from Foxtrot to Selling England... from a mellow Macca tone to somewhat Squire-ish :D

Talk about a tonal jump! FGTR sounds like a totally different band. I still like it though.

The only association or use I know of between Rutherford and Ricks post-'74-ish would be the 450/12 FG on the cover of Acting Very Strange, and his use of a 360/12v64 FG on the We Can't Dance tour for Dance on a Volcano. Oh, and the Tell My Why recording and video. off the top of my head that is.

Jeff and I are big Genesis fans. Sadly, Jeff never saw them live.

How old were you in the Spring of 1972? Your parents didn't even know each other existed, while I, on the other hand, saw Genesis LOTS of times!

My father had the pleasure of seeing The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway live (which very little footage exists of) and likes to tease me with that. He still maintains it was one of the best concerts he ever went to. Very extravagant.

Wasn't "The Lamb" also played on the Ric twin neck?

From 77 onwards I think he went on to the Shergold twin neck for several years before going on to Steinbergers.

Lamb was the Microfrets doubleneck... six-string bass BTW.

Was it ever documented anywhere as to why Mike went away from using Ric Basses?

Wasn't it because he started also playing guitar and got the doubleneck?
