Here are a couple Beatle bass covers on my 4001C64S (video)

Post by RobW »

Just to show off some of the tones possible with this awesome bass, here's a "bright, crunchy tone" on my 4001 with TI flatwounds and tone knobs on neutral, switch on both pickups, playing "You Never Give Me Your Money":

And here's a more "thumpy" tone on the Beatles' "Something," switch on the neck pickup, tone knobs half the way down:

I dunno, I just love this bass!

You have that tone dialed for "You never give me your Money" Excellent!
The bass is a 4001C64, not an S, the S's have rounded horns and (most of the time) a matte finish.

That was great! 2 songs from the greatest album ever recorded in history IMO. Your tone is amazing! (kind of makes me want to put a set of those strings on mine)

Great Job!!

Great stuff!
I see what looks like a gain reduction meter jumping around in the background... what compressor unit are you plugged into?

It's an Alesis 3630 but it's in the effects send and return loop on the amp, which is then miked, so it's just to get the "compressed sound" and not to actually compress the signal. (Then the mic goes into a tube preamp to try to get some of the tube overdrive sound).

The tone in the real "Something" track has something weird going on -- lots of something being distorted or overdriven. I'm not sure if it was their amp or mixing desk or both, but if you listen to the isolated bass track it has a slow, sloppy attack on each note. I just couldn't reproduce that long attack either with the Rick or my Hoefner, both with and without compression and tube overdrive. The closest I could get was the Rick with no compression, the treble rolled off, and a paper towel mute between the bridge and bridge pickup (like I saw on a McCartney picture from the Abbey Road period).

You're right of course, it's a straight 4001c64. I should know my own bass! I was thinking of my old c64S I ended up pawning for $600 in '96, the second worst decision of my life! (After my ex...)

Great tones out of the bass! And spot on playing.

I love my 4001c64s bass best as well. It's the one I go to most often to play. Something about
it just feels and sounds right.

Although reading other posts and looking closer, it's a C64! Not an 'S'. Either way, I still love
the c64 series basses.

Robert, what did you mean by "tone knobs on neutral"? Mark

I meant the tone knob on the bass half-way between all the way up and all the way down, and the tone knobs on the amp in the middle at zero.
