Jake, by the time you come out here, I should have about 30 Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers songs down very well...and an awesome band to go with.

Any other pedals you guys have had success with? Would love to see your bass pedalboards too.

Now, my questions:
1- Every bassist and his mother uses a Sansamp. I'm not even sure I know what this thing is supposed to do. Why should I/shouldn't I have one?
2- I don't think the technology is quite there yet, but is there a synth pedal any of you have had success with? The EHX Bass Micro Synth is cool but a little too prog-sounding; I need something more modern.
3- The Muff sounds badass of course, but is a little lacking in the mids department so I'm afraid of it getting lost in the shuffle live, especially since I'm constantly doing battle with a keyboard player who can't help but double me on EVERY line. Is there a big fuzz with more balls?

1- I don't like anything tech 21 makes...
2- you will get further with a good gated fuzz and a good filter.
3- there are so many things these days that work better them muffs unless you play doom and muffs with mid controls that more info to what actual sounds you want and like are needed

I am so behind the curve here!!! I would not know what to do with all those buttons and knobs. Seriously. I guess I'm missing out on something big?? I was thinking getting something along the lines of a 'Big Muff" type effect and I thought that was a bit wild. I feel like such a newbie now.

I am really happy with my current setup (enter fuzzy iPhone pic):



Everything's true bypass--I'm a stickler about that, not a big fan of buffered bypass. But I always leave the Punch Factory on so the signal is buffered and isn't going to get any tone suckage from going through more and more lengths of cable. It also makes the effects come alive better. As you can see the effects I use are limited to fuzz/distortion. I have tried chorus, synth, and others and just didn't get enthusiastic enough to keep them on my tiny pedalboard. I still need to try a bass octaver however. In any case... the Tall Font Russian is the absolute best Muff I could find after months of trying them out and is very easy to dial in, but the Swollen Pickle is nice because it can sound very "squishy" and works better for "synth-y fuzz" or certain dance-like tones. The Pork Loin is good for adding a bit of girth onto the clean signal or in combination with either the Pickle or the Muff.

Oh well my Digitech BP200 started to go out on the 4th of July. Now it's completely useless. It turns on, scrolls through the effects, but doesn't put out any signal. I have the feeling it's the pot in the volume/expression pedal. I'll try to fix it, though I know there are better pedals out there. If I can't fix it. I might go with the Zoom B3 that Dane recommended...though it doesn't have a volume pedal, which I got so used to having.

I have access to both a Swollen Pickle and a Pork Loin, I should try them out sometime.

Fair warning, the Way Huge pedals both take a lot more dialing in than (say) a Big Muff. The Pickle in particular has some internal pots that really help optimize it for bass.

The pedals belong to our lead guitarist, so I will have to borrow them from him. They usually live on his Pedaltrain board.
