HELP.What to Use To Get Bass Autographed?

Post by mikeyesfan »

Hey guys, saw YES last night in Philly..What a Great Show.
Chris offered to sign my Bass if I bring it tomorrow.

What kind of marker should I use?
Where should he sign it?
Not really sure if I want to carry it to the Show but he wants to sign it.
I joked with him and said the True Rick fans won't want the bass signed..just played, he thought I was nuts..LOL

Use a Sharpie CD/DVD marker pen. They dry quickly and don't smear. I have had a number of RIC pickguards signed. Once it's signed (and dry), I wrap the guard loosely in a clean paper towel and put it in a ziplok bag. This assures that you won't be damaging it with scrapes or sweat and it also puts it out of sight from anyone else who might want it. I agree with not signing anywhere on the finish.

Have him sign it where the signature is on the CS bass. Then, you've got your own limited edition (1 of ?, a small number) signature CS Rick bass, and the signature wasn't printed on with a machine (unless he's bionic now).

Also, it might be overkill, but I try to take a dated picture (when I get home) of the signed guard and my ticket stub, which shows the date of the concert. If you can get a friend to take a picture (or video) of you watching him sign it, that's great documentation, too. Someday, you may want to sell and have to answer the question. "How do I know that HE really signed it?"

Richard Bengston shot this one of CS signing the original pickguard of my refurbished '72. Jeff Scott is whispering in CS's ear, "Don't do it, Chris, I'll never hear the end of it!"

Just my take - At some point I may ask Chris to sign my 4001S Custom bass, if so, I'll have him sign with a finer point sharpie on the back of the headstock, just under the tuners, where I can then have my Luthier shoot a clear coat over it to preserve the signature. But... so far I don't want this, as he has already played it. I don't want any signature on the front side, anywhere. I've seen basses with the upper horn signed, etc... to me it detracts from the look. Below the tuners would be my option.

That's awesome! Having a celebrity and a huge talent actually play your bass, let alone sign it, is way cool!! While I'm not a Yes fan, I saw they were playing a local venue while I was away on vacation. Part of me wanted to be able to go because it is a smaller venue and I know Chris Squire is a huge fan of Rickenbackers.

Well I hung with Chris but didn't bring the Bass...I told him another time when he's not rushing around on tour. I really didn't want to worry about carrying it all night and I was NOT leaving it in the car...
Didn't have time to remove Pick guard which is a very good Idea.
Now I know he will sign I will be ready next time he's here.

Thanks again...
