Like Jeff, when I started playing, flatwounds were all that were available. In fact, when I first heard Chris Squire's playing style, I didn't like it, because I was a real Jack Bruce/Felix Pappalardi influenced player, and I believed that flatwound, Gibson EB-3 "wall of mud" sound was the only true bass sound to strive for. Can you believe it -- me, squirebass no less!!! Ah, I was soooo young and naive then!
But I do like flats on a Rick, and I have a set of TIs on a v63 that I use on certain recordings which seem to require it. And I liked using that bass live, when I played in my most recent band...

"This is the big one, Elizabeth, I'm coming to join ya, honey!"
On my first bass (a cheap Japanese bass called Encore) I used to pack foam under the bridge cover to further mute the funky flatwounds. I also had an awakening when I first tried rounds. I have been a roundwound player ever since. I know you vintage guys will cringe when I tell you that I use DR Highbeams on my '63. It sounds GREAT. I can do the CS tone more or less perfectly.
