How so? The space between the underside of the cover and the surround is the same, if not more so.

Pickup and cover all move up and down together, depending on action, pickup height you want, height you want the cover to be above the string you might need to tweak a little. I needed about a 1/8" more then what came with the bass.. [actually I had to buy a new cover but the owner before me stuck them under the pickup] to be happy

A friend who purchased a '69 4001 new had the short plastic cover on his bass. ...
...could you check with your friend, if the PU surround of the short cover was "scooped"?

From the basses I've had, the earliest non-scooped surround
came on a Dec 72 4001. My May 77 (QExxxx) 4001 had a thin handrest
with an unscooped surround.
I recall the first I saw the current thick handrest was
in 1980 (maybe 81..)

...it seems like in Dec. 1968 the HS was first time replaced with Higain and short PU-Cover. The scooped surround (in Dec.1968 already with sharp corners) was with the HS earlier already.

I can ask but he no longer has this bass.
