What recordings do you listen to when you wanna hear a Ric?

Well I'll be damned! There goes THAT illusion! This whole time I thought that was a Rick on the first album. But the sound similarity between a 4001 and a P at least makes more sense than a Jazz.!

I have heard that many times peviously......but, to my ears.....a Jazz gets a LOT closer to the tone of a 4001 than a P.
Just my observation.

Early Kate Bush hits - David Paton on bass??? got to have been done on his Ric!

10CC - all their early stuff, "Wall Street Shuffle", "Life is a Minestrone" (see the TOTP2 Live Version on You Tube - 4001 JG with a Toaster). etc etc.

Sparks - all their early hits "This Town Ain't Big Enough", "Girls, Girls, Girls" etc etc.

B.T.O. - "You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet".

Eagles - "Hotel California" - (Randy Meisner).

I think it depends who's playing it, what the individual instrument is like and what Ric sound you're after. I can usually get a good P to sound more like a Ric than a J.

For me, I'll put on anything by Yes, Deep Purple Made in Japan (used to say Made in Europe too 'til I found out it was probably a P, despite the pictures), early Genesis (e.g. Live), Motorhead / Hawkwind, or maybe a bit of Renaissance. Occasionally I'll stick a bit of early Rush on but for some reason I'm finding them harder to listen to these days (they were my favourite band once - briefly - but times and tastes change).

I will say I'm tending to watch footage more than listen to albums these days - I think it's because I want to see how cool those basses look as well as hear how cool they sound!

I think early Bee Gees had a Rickenbacker bass. Massachutes, To Love Somebody , Got To Get A Message To You The sustain and deep bass were great!

I'll play this game. Aside from Yes and many others, my go to for Rickenbacker sound is an underrated and sadly no longer Australian post rock delicious noise band - RICAINE.

From memory, a 4000 JetGlo with maybe a Bartolini pickup. To my knowledge Brett O'Riley still plays it in Blacklevel Embassy.
