325C58 wiring

Post by rickm »

I recently bought a 325C58 and still can't figure out the wiring. I assume that:
1. The lower bridge-side knob is the bridge PU volume.
2. The lower neck-side knob is the neck+mid PU volume.
3. The upper bridge-side knob is the bridge tone (which seems to be full-open when turned CCW)
4. The upper neck-side knob seems to do nothing for me...is there a defect here, or does it just do something really subtle?

Also, it seems that the volume of the neck+mid dominates the bridge volume, as when both volume knobs are maxed, there is no difference in sound between the middle and up toggle positions. Only when I back off of the neck+mid volume do I hear the influence of the bridge pickup when in the middle toggle position. Is this correct, and what about the upper neck-side knob? Thanks! Rick

Rick, the tone pots on the C58 are wired in reverse, i.e. anti-clockwise for full tone.

The two pots on the bottom are(L to R, with the guitar in your lap) neck/middle volume, and bridge volume.

Here's a pic of the '58 spec wiring looms I'm currently making for 325C58's (or any other 325's). For those who are interested in the original style controls, these ones don't have the usual Ric configuration as leftybass correctly indicated above.

If you use one of these, you'll be using '58 style controls, where you can select different combinations of the 3 pickups and the controls are in the '58 postions. I've also gone to the trouble of reproducing the Astron Caps and Mallory Pot labels.

I wonder what was installed in place of the stock Loom? I happened to check the 2 most recent feedbacks of the seller. One was quite a scathing negative. I noticed that both were guitar related auctions. In one the seller portrays himself as not knowing much about guitars "...Rickenbacker guitar ser# XE 0522 I took this in on trade so I dont know much about it It could use a set up and tlc and wiring I cant make it work...". In the other auction he indicates quite the opposite, using the following terminology "....Solid 5 quarter maple perfectly book matched measures 21" x 17" 1" 1/4 this is straight out of my carver so it needs final top sanding and the back needs to be hollowed out and tap tuned to your preference...."

You have to wonder about that sort of thing

Well, I know the people I have made "beefed up" looms for, so it wasn't one that came from me that got used as a replacement.

I believe that's the Ebay name for a guitar parts place called ToneWerks. Not being able to make that wiring work in the recent auction would thrown me off knowing this, only because one of their items they sell is a Ric Byrds style wiring loom with or without the compressor I believe. If they know how to make one of these, they'd surely know how to work out a stock Ric wiring.

"Like sands through the hour glass...........

I sold that guitar as I found it for cheap. I mentioned it was a refin and it needed some wiring and a little TLC! It was a player instrument with no other issues. The guitar parts alone added up more in value than what the guitar sold for. If the buyer would have done a little homework or asked more questions, he would have realized that he would have had to of spent twice that much for a mint 350! I did not want to put any more time OR money into the guitar. It was sold as a player grade instrument as found. You can't please everybody. On ebay I have REPEATED PAGES OF POSITIVE FEEDBACK!!! That alone say's enough. In a barrel of apples you are sure to find one worm!

As for the C58 harness, it is the REAL DEAL and I am offering it for a great price. I decided to make a new replica harness for my C58 with better quality parts than what comes from the factory IMHO! My C58 now sounds 100% better to my own ears"!

........so are the days of our lives"!
