Tom Petty said simply in 2007, "What they call country today is just bad rock with a fiddle"

Johnny Cash, Hank Williams Sr, Conway Twitty, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Waylon Jennings, Carl Perkins and Merle Haggard is TRUE country. 8)

I agree with Tom Petty, except I think 98.9% of ALL country music is just horrible rock with a fiddle AND annoying vocals.

Well yeah, it does. If you consider this lady country, that is

Yes, Emmylou is country, indeed. She's old school, thankfully. I particularly loved her work with Gram Parsons.

That's just the thing, though. She's not really modern country. She's been doing the same thing all along.

Jake, that quote from Tom Petty perfectly summed up country's state of affairs.

As for the original topic, I certainly wouldn't hesitate to use my 4003 if I landed a country gig. Like Joshua said, that neck pickup won't steer you wrong in that scenario.

Take out the fiddle, add Jeff Lynne, and you've got Petty.

You gotta have Chet Atkins and Roy Clark in there. And I could live without Conway Twitty, but I'll grant you some latitude.

Hahahaha!

You won't get any grief from me over that comment, but those are fightin' words for most folks around here.

Ah, yes! How could I forget them, especially Chet? He had that great style of playing guitar that was unique like no other.

When I was young, I was tortured by my Father by making me watch Hee Haw every week! The only bright spot (other than the well endowed young ladies  ) was watching Roy Clark pickin'!

Having spent much of 2010 living in and playing in Nashville, I can tell you that every conceivable type of country is alive and well. "Traditional" country may not get the same radio time that some folks want, but there's a mess of folks pouring their hearts and souls into that genre.

Personally, I love a lot of different types of country (I strongly dislike others!). Most pop music (be it pop country, pop R n' B, pop rock, etc.), though, is a "watered down" version of what some folks consider the "real deal." That's the history of pop music. Keep in mind that what everyone is saying about Gloriana is the same thing folks said about Johnny Cash and the third wave of country music back in the 50s and 60s. He was popular rubbish back then compared to Roy Acuff.

That's my subjectivist mini rant
