Book title change

Post by bassduke49 »

I'm sure this all has to do with marketing, and I'm OK with it. The publisher wanted a tweak in the title, so here it is:

"The Rickenbacker Electric Bass - 50 Years As Rock's Bottom"

Yes, we all know that Rickenbacker doesn't make basses that are not electric, and we know it's been more than 50 years, but these guys know what they're doing and a book's cover and title really DO have a lot to do with the sales of a book.

So TREB is the acronym.

I wonder if anybody on the committee pushed for "Bass Guitar" somewhere in the title. That could have been a hot potato.

I think it would get more interest from the average music enthusiast with "Bass Guitar" in the title...but what do I know...

Those terms get used synonymously, with "electric bass" predating "bass guitar" as the popular terminology if I'm not mistaken. "Electric bass" is also synonymous for "Fender bass", meaing P Bass, within certain circles of musical elders. Since the book is about a historical perspective it is probably more appropriate. In any case I have seen TalkBass threads on which term is better go to their post limit before getting locked (everyone with their own crazy theory about how the four-banger evolved from either the bass viol, the classical guitar, or a third camp that says it was most definitely the clarinet, comes out of the woodwork) so we'd best not get that started...

I bet John Hall has some interesting perspective on this because the 4000 Series is the second-oldest bass design that has retained its popularity over the years. He's probably heard Ric basses referred to every possible way one could imagine.

Bluewhale was posting to you but is dyslexic? Or your parents foresaw the book retitling and were dyslexic naming you?
