I think the upside down headstock looks cool. It's different and sets it apart from the V63. Besides, John Hall has said they sell all that they build. If you guys don't cool it on the C64 bashing, not only will John never come back, he'll also never put out the 'V68" or whatever you call the "Forum Bass".

Why is it verboten to express the meerest hint of a criticism towards RIC? Everybody here loves the company and the product. . .

It isn't verboten but the last round of RIC critisism resulted in the exiting of John Hall from the forum.

there is nothing wrong with dialogue or expressing opinions ... I think John left because some of the comments got a little personal ...

you guys know I pretty much say what I think ... how I don't like mechanical mutes or pickup covers or ric-o-sound or bass cut capaciters or flat wound strings ... but I don't trash people or companies ... and I respect those who disagree with me ...

This is one of the few good natured forums on the internet ... some of us have been trashed on the internet before ... I'm glad it doesn't happen here ...

I have to agree that the headstock is a problem (at least for me).
It looks a bit like wearing an obvious Beatle wig.

John Hall doesn't expect every product will please everyone. Nor do I think he would ever refuse out of spite to issue a product he thinks is viable just because some people don't like the way some other products look or sound.

But discussion of products is a far cry from telling someone how to run his business and being abusive about it, including vicious personal attacks. And he was especially subject to abuse for acting to protect his trademarks. It's a shame that a handful of people spoiled it for the rest of us.

FWIW, the 4001c64 headstock looked odd to me at first, but it's grown on me and sure wouldn't stop me from buying one. Still, for the money I'd rather have a pair of 4003s. Image

It's pretty obvious that everybody on this forum is a Rickenbacker fan......probably very passionate ones. So it is likely that drastic design changes like the flipped headstock would bring about polarized opinions either for or against....I can't see that this is at all a bad thing. If everyone's opinion were the same this site would be nothing but a bore-fest....with a Beatle wig. Image

I'd give the c64/64s four more years of production.

Then they'll go back to the v63... or, if my luck's in hand, a 4001 v72!

my advice buy one now while people complain about the backwards headstock ... put it in a case under the bed ... then resell it for $7000 when they are discontinued ...

Don't give me anymore ideas ;^).
If you think all is going well, you've obviously overlooked something.

Many of you are taking the headstock thing WAY too far. If the design is not to your liking, then maybe you should consider another model.

As it was stated before, the whole reason behind the headstock being reversed on the C64 and C64S is that these basses are intended to be re-issues of McCartney's own Rickenbacker bass (which had a reversed headstock, since he's a lefty) from various points in history. If it wasn't reversed, then it wouldn't be accurate to Paul's bass, it would be just another right-handed bass.(ha)

I guess you could always learn to play left-handed....Image

As far as playability, I tried a C64S(upside down)over the weekend, right out of the box too----I had no issues with it....it had awesome action..
