We made at least 50,000 basses with that old design which are perfectly serviceable.

John, just out of curiosity, what does one need to do to get the old design saddles to stop rattling? Is there a fix for it that doesn't involve shimming?

I'd be curious about that the answer to that too, but shimming (I like aluminum foil) really works nicely for those who want a fast DIY fix. Of course this just stops the rattle... the saddle slot may be too high off of the bridge and cause action problems as well, meaning you need to file the saddle down more; this can be checked with a 6'' ruler.

If I had this problem, I would just remove the intonations screws and let the string under tension hold the saddle in place until I could get the saddles that have been improved.

I've had to throw at least $75.00 worth of the saddles away after replacing them, and those were NEW saddles that I thought would fit better. It's unlikely anyone will associate the buzzing and rattling these things did with any "mojo".

Ok, I see the problem I addressed here : viewtopic.php?f=2&t=406874 is discussed in this thread. I guess I'll have to call customer service later and see what they can do. First I'll call my friend and tell him to smack himself in the head for not sending in his warranty card. This is definitely a 2012 bass.
