Welcome aboard, Seth! Although I prefer a wider space between each low course and high octave, it looks like your nut was modded to match or approximate the string-spacing of the current (post-2005) 300 series (tighter spacing within each pair and wider spacing between pairs). This seems to be a common preference among players here. I think you'll absolutely LOVE the Thomastik Infeld flats. As was previously stated, you can't beat them for tone, comfort, and longevity. When you consider these three factors, $35.00 is a bargain for a set. Please keep us posted on how the guitar plays. And, by all means, do send more photos!

Thanks so much for the info on the nut, and the string recommendation of course! Knowledge is power! It took me two weeks to figure out the right amp settings and guitar settings on my Gretsch (Double Anni) to get that sound I was after- I'm hoping to crunch that time in half with this one! I have two amps this time around to experiment with, a '71 Twin and a '98 single 12" Deluxe...
I'm off to play a bar gig with the Gretsch, (which is insanely jealous now)- I hope these 2 gals get along!

So the slots cut all the way through the headstock came into being in 2005. This guy's guitar is a 2005. He has Last Of The Mohicans -- the last of the lost tribe of classic Rickenbacker 360/12 design.

They'll get along just fine. Here is a photo of a 1961 6117 (Double Anni) I used to own; it is now in the far more capable hands of a forumite.

So this thing's not half as difficult to play as I was anticipating- and whoever sold this to the guitar shop I bought it from, they not only changed out the nut, but also put a 12 saddle bridge on, and intonated it with flats! does anyone know which flats have red ends?
After tuning it back up to pitch and playing it unplugged, I plugged it into my smaller amp, a Fender Deluxe- Strummed a chord, and ack!! Distorted! I checked the amp, and it was only on 1, with no overdrive, no reverb, and tone controls normal! were these pickups fudged up?! it couldn't SUPPOSED to have sounded like that! then I spun the amp around... one of my tubes came loose bringing it back from a show yesterday! so I jammed it back in, and BBBBRRRRINNNG!! georgeous!!!

Pyramids or Tomastik-Infeld. TIs will have only the wound strings wrapped in silk, but with Pyramids, all the strings are silk-wrapped. You can only get the TIs as a 12-string set from Pick Of The Ricks...they are hands down the best strings for 12-string guitar. Makes everything sound great and clear, have low tension and are easier on the fingers.

no silk on the unwounds, so I guess they're Tomastik-Infelds! great, since that's the same set I just ordered, so I can hold off on changing strings- that 35$ covers the 3 packs of Ernie Balls I mistakenly ordered
alright back to playing that sweet thing!

The 12 saddle bridge is a nice upgrade. It's not necessary but many of us like them.

haha! well, I theoretically saved x amount of dollars on the nut/saddle/strings, and considering I would have spent that x amount of cash on said items, the pickups wouldn't really be that expensive, right? (I'm glad my wife doesnt monitor at my forum activity)
