Markings & what do they mean?

Post by basshead »

Hi people, I'm sure it's been asked before, but I couldn't find any reference to it. What do these marks mean in the control cavity on a 4001?

I know 4001 is the model.

Not sure what the Z or X mean. I thought the finish was listed after the model, e.g., FG (for Fire Glo), JG (for Jet Glo), or MG (for Maple Glo).

Could the FCH marking be Mr. Hall? Just a guess.

What year is your bass?
Watch those teeth, Marlin. I'm not sure we've properly sedated the beast . . .

Mostly they mean whatever the people working on them wanted them to mean. There's no real set rules for any of the markings and they certainly have changed over time...
I have NO idea what to do with those skinny stringed things... I'm just a bass player...

My '73 MG is marked "Nat," as opposed to MG. I'm assuming it means "natural" finish.
Can we have everything louder than everything else?

They generally don't mean anything.

Some think it is a batch designator. Perhaps an indicator of keeping the instrument within a work flow. Today we clear coat the "M" batch, tomorrow the "N" batch, etc.

This bass had the most markings I've seen.

I have some extras too, '' Mal Puesto el Type '', my Spanish is a little rusty but I think it means it's not a very good bass, ironically it's one of the best sounding I have.
