As I ponder the Cheyenne

Post by jaymi »

For those of you who have a cheyenne, or should I say, for those of you who PLAY your cheyenne basses, what styles have you found them to really work in? I am going to try to use one this weekend on a gig in Cali(if it gets here in time) and I am just curious as to what styles you guys have used these in successfully...I am playing kind of a U2 rock show and I was planning on using my 80 4003 but I almost always carry a spare bass(double gig bag makes it easy) and thought I might give this monster a whirl...Thoughts???
I know that they look nice in pics but let's talk about the growl, the grind, the sheen...play them thangs and tell me what you think!!

It growls alright. It's a warmer tone than the 4003. You won't have the highs, but it has bottom end. I don't think it sustains as well as the 4003, but it still has a tone I think is more suitable for classic rock where a P Bass would normally be used. You'll have a lot of bases covered with a Cheyenne and a 4003.
If you think all is going well, you've obviously overlooked something.

This particular bass has had some adjustments done and the pots have been changed to 500k and there are three so it is wired like a jazz bass. I am really curious to hear some GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRowlll

Jaymi ... the Cheyene you are getting from me will be brighter than most because of the way I rewired it ...

Normally Ric basses have 250k pots ... I rewire my 4004 basses with 500k pots in a volume, volume, tone setup like a jazz bass ... this enhances the high end treble response ... it still has humbucker pickups that are in series like a p-bass ... which is why it has that nice growl ...

also this is the one that Ted replaced the fretboard ...

I use my 4004L5 for modern rock and classic rock ... with the low B and the re-wiring and the maple body and maple fret board it has a different sound ... I use a pod setting with distortion ... I use that bass for Creed, Green Day, Leonard Skinard, blues, and other stuff ...

the 4004C is a little warmer and has nice mid response ... and it is light ... like playing air-guitar ... and it is quiet ...

can't wait..the guy that I am filling in for uses a jazz bass and I ended up using his rig which was the SansAmp rack unit, an ampeg svt 3 pro and an 8x10...it was blazin'....I am curious to see what this bass does to his rig (evil laugh)

You'll have bottom end for the ages. I use an SVT-3 Pro with an SVT410HLF cabinet.

I am looking forward to it getting here today so I can tweak before playing this weekend. I hopefully will have some pictures from this show and I will post them.
