Buzzing tailpiece on 330/6

Post by aristeas »

Still working with my new 330 to get everything set up to my liking and it now nails the 'Echo & the Bunnymen' sound perfectly. But along the way I've found a problem. I have a buzzing sound coming from the tailpiece on the G and B strings. It sounds like the strings are brushing against the tailpiece somewhere which sends a high pitched shimmering whiney noise through to the strings and pickups. It wouldn't be a huge problem except it's off key (any key!). Anyone had a simliar problem or have an easy way to fix it? TIA

Well first off, congrats on nailing the bunnymen sound.
What kind of tailpiece is it? Trapeze? The problem with buzzing for me has usually been the saddle. I had a 360V64 with a buzzy G string that would not go away, so I took it to my guy and told him to check the nut and saddle and file if needed. He ended up completely changing my G saddle. Took care of it.
Also, make sure your truss rods aren't loose.

Thanks Spencer, the bridge might be part of the problem, at least on one of the strings. I'll check it out and see if it improves..

Thanks Spencer, and also Mark Arnquist for the email. Yes, it was the bridge saddles. In dropping string gauge from standard 10s to 09s the G-B-E strings were slot rattling. I've come up with a temporary fix that's working very well. I've cut a small piece of translucent plastic shopping bag and placed it over the saddle while I put the string on. Trimmed round the slot with a scalpel to remove as much plastic as possible, and problem solved. No bridge rattle and a practically invisble fix, with no replacing saddles or other major surgery required. and now I'm going to crank up the amp and enjoy..

Mine on my 360 comes and goes. Sometimes its gone for and entire set of strings life time. Then with the next set it might reappear briefly. However I've never heard it thru and amp.
