This is how my friend found the bass. I changed the strings...and all the metallic parts were polish...I didn't make any changes. I was also impressed by this bass

were not saying you changed any parts, but someone else did previously, possibly. i have a '64 that i restored that looks like the one you have. mine was missing everything except the bridge/tailpiece, jackplate and machine heads. unless you followed your bass from the start, you'll never know what was original or replaced. it's not a bad thing. i wonder if yours has the original paint ?

in the register we have about 9 4000/4001 basses from 1963 and out of the 4 4000 basses...3 of them do not have a tug bar. whether they all have original pickguards, is unclear but yours is possible given what is in our register. we would love to see pics under the pickguard of the control cavities and under the guard where the pots and pickup are ,and possibly a closeup of the surround on the rear pickup and possibly the rear pickup coil ...pretty please with sugar on top ???

Not really; you should be able to remove the pickguard screws and lift the pickguard up and out from underneath the strings. Do so gently as you don't want to move it too far or too quickly which might loosen a connection wire.

And watch that the toaster mounting screws and/or magnets if long pole do not scratch the finish of the bass. Place a towel on the bass by the lower horn area to help protect it.

I'll upload some pics from my bass....I don't know what to do with it....I mean keep it?? sell it?? I'm a big fan of the Beatles. I've been playing bass guitar for 15 years...(I'm 31 now) and I always wanted a rick. Now I have it..but it is kind of frustrating not having it fine...and the luthier we have in Peru, it's not a RICK luthier...

Good god man, you have very close to the Holy Grail of Ricks there. Sure enough it is a keeper!

If the condition worries you, we have two members here capable of factory quality refinishing.

All great advice so far. As the others said, the guard will angle up towards you. Just move slowly your first time. With it out, get a good picture of the control area so it fills the viewfinder and maybe we can see why you are having the hum.

Has the photo of the jackplate with SN been reversed somehow?

Should the number not be across the bottom like on this 1963 4000?

well i'm impressed on the serial #. the pickguard looks to be a v63 replacement unless tug bars were not installed in early '63 ??? was jetglo available in '63 or a repaint ??? hardware looks correct. still a question on the surround ???

I had a '64 with no tug bar. Thought the guard was replaced, but there weren't even screw holes in the body.

The no "made in USA" trc is right for the era (I think; I've seen white trc's w/out Made... as late as 63).

The "grommet-less" string posts could be right as I have also seen that on a 63 bass/six double neck.
Unless the black paint is hiding black 70's grommets....
