That said, I know people fly with their basses, so maybe some will chime in with successful means of doing so. I just wanted to present some hurdles, so it's good that you're preparing early.

I flew weekly my Steinberger L2 for 3 years in a row (which is the reason I purchased this ugly duckling). The case was the original padded gig bag. Not a single issue to report.

My own opinion, people are way too nervous when it comes to travelling with their instruments.

If there is no connecting flights, I do not see any issues.

I wouldn't fly with either bass. Just go to Sepp's place and borrow one of his basses while you are in Jersey! Greg's basses wouldn't work for you, take my word for it.

Bring the Ric. Get a case for it, any case that it will fit in, and make sure you find out the model of jet you are flying to ensure the length of the overhead bin space. There was still two feet of space left on the one I flew on. Get some zip ties and put several around each side of the case (may need 4-5 per side). You can get in the first line that enters the plane and stow it in the top bin. I was able to carry my instrument, my luggage, and a laptop bag onboard. If it's a jet flying from CA, it's likely it will fit no problem. I just flew from Baltimore to Detroit a month ago with a '71 Ric bass, and Delta let me get on the jet first to ensure I had overhead space. There was a law passed that says musicians can bring an instrument on the plane with them. FAA Modernization and Reform Act of 2012 (H.R. 658)

Hi Rod, thanks for the info regarding the FAA Modernization and Reform Act of 2012 (H.R. 658). I am planning a trip back east next year and need to bring my '77 4001. I usually fly Southwest but would gladly fly another carrier if they have more overhead space. Really didn't want to have to buy a ticket for my Ric, but was going to do it if need be. Sweet!

There was a law passed that says musicians can bring an instrument on the plane with them. FAA Modernization and Reform Act of 2012 (H.R. 658)

Read the FAA Modernization and Reform Act of 2012 (H.R. 658) section 403 thoroughly. It says that you can bring an instrument on board if it meets the requirements established by the, "Administrator", it doesn't say that you definitely will be able to. The administrator will be who ever at the airport, whether at the gate or on the plane says, "No, it won't fit". Don't just assume they'll let you bring your instrument on board, even if you have a copy of it with you. Your instrument has to fit. A long scale bass guitar in a case will be considered a large instrument. Depending on the aircraft (smaller ones have smaller storage compartments), and how much filled it is with people and luggage, the flight crew might still deny you bringing a bass guitar case into the cabin due to it's size, telling you that they don't have room for it. If you are lucky enough to bring it into the cabin without buying a seat for it, they might tell you it's your one personal item.

When I fly, I don't usually want to bring my Ric with me. Even if I had a flight case, I wouldn't know how to check it in, as luggage or a personal item. And when I go to SoCal, I don't worry because I know my friends here will let me borrow a Ric. Whenever I travel by road, however, I usually will bring my Martin acoustic with me.
