650F Bridge HB to Toaster Conversion

Finally got my system back together ( well most of it ) and had time to record a couple of quick samples change out the bridge pickup and record another set of samples.

I just used a VERY simple progression over and over again, but I wanted the focus on the sound not what I was playing.

These are recorded direct into a Delta 1010, no pre ( it was one of the pieces that fried last week ). I added some very light VC 64 software compression to both tracks. No EQ, no reverb, nothing else.

There are six segments to each sample
1) bridge pickup, picked right over the pickup
2) bridge pickup, picked halfway between the two pickups
3) both pickups, picked right over the bridge pickup
4) both pickups, picked halfway between them
5) neck pickup, picked right over the bridge pickup
6) neck pickup, picked halfway between them

I am really pleased with the results, I was looking for the brighter sound in number 2, the sounds of 3 and 4 were an added bonus which I will use a lot. 6 is my usual go to pickup for distorted lead sound ( heavily processed of course ).

Hope some others get some value from this.

Harry.....Since you're using a single coil pickup and a humbucker on the same guitar, I'm wondering if you experience a volume drop when running both pickups at the same time that can only be overcome by lowering the volume of either pickup?

Yes no question the HB has more volume. To blend the sound I am rolling the volume back on the neck pickup to get the tone I want. The plus is that the there is a wide variety of tones, the downside is that you do have to set up in advance. I now see where that 5th knob would come in handy.

you can place a flat bar magnet across the underside of your toaster p/up to boost output if you like; to my ear the brightness of the Toaster is not diminished by this. I've done this on both of my 381s to increase bridge p/up output.

The 650 doesn't have the 5th knob so in order to blend the sound I had to roll the HB volume back about 1/3 volume to get the blend you are hearing in samples 3 and 4. I think it has a really nice ring to it, the combination of the two pickups seems to add some additional harmonics that really make a rich, yet bright sound.

With the HB at full volume all you hear is it.
