Macca bass teaser!

Post by rickaddict »

Hi guys! I was just checking out a couple Beatles videos on YouTube when I came across this version of "Get Back:"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BS2DGxRl ... re=related

Paul is playing the Hofner the whole time...except at about the 2:07 point...for a split second we get a camera angle from behind Paul where we see the back of the headstock of Paul's RM 1999 in his hand. Then the video cuts to a front angle, and he's playing the Hofner again (That's some spooky stuff to be pulling on me this close to Halloween, man! )

What's up with that? Which bass did he use on the recording? It sorta sounds like the Hofner to me.

And the RM is still FG...I guess it hadn't been sanded yet at that point?

You can always tell when its the Hofner when Paul plays higher up the neck. Never in tune, like this song.

I would consider that "rare" version just a montage with footage from all over the place.
Even when it is from actual "Get Back" sessions it is mostly not in sync and as you noticed the guitars, clothes, etc change.

What's that bass at 0:54 - is it a Precision? Very blurry as it's through the internal screens, but it doesn't look like his Hofner or Ric?

Looks like a Fender headstock to me. I think Paul had a Jazz though.

I like the flailing strums that Paul does in this video!

Paul had a left handed Jazz bass, but I'm not sure when he got it. The Beatles collectively owned a right-handed Jass Bass they used a bit. I've seen photos of Paul and George playing it. I've also seen a photo of Paul playing the lefty JB.

I believe this is from the "White Album" timeframe.

Like Stephen Terry said - clips were used from all over the place set to the album version of the song. So it's not as though any previously unheard takes were even brought to light. The RM clip could have been from a different song entirely. And notice that at about 2:10 Paul & John are bouncing around playing something at a tempo that doesn't even match that of 'Get Back.'

IIRC Paul's Jazz Bass in those days was a '66....oval paddles on the tuners.....

As far as I know his bass is not a RM1999 because this is the Uk distribution model but Paul's was a 4000+1 pickup that was handed to him in the states at some point.

Correct, it is not a RM1999.

Yes, but we've been asking that question for almost 50 years, now!

The new November 2012 Mojo music magazine has a quote from Jeff Lynne (from an ELO/Jeff Lynne story) that Paul was playing the Fender Jazz for a bit with the price tag still on it. He was able to get into Abbey Road studios through a contact to watch the Beatles recording once. It was the day after John Lennon's 28th birthday.
