Re: '68 4001 v '79 4001S sound test
Well. late to this, since the cat is out of the bag, but I agree with the '79 sounding cleaner and treblier (probably both due to newer strings), but the '68 had a more rounder, fuller, or 3D-ness to it the '79 didn't have, even having an old horseshoe pup on it. And I was sure of which was the '68 even before reading the thread, after just listening. I preferred the '79 on the Siberian bit but the '68 on the others. My 2 cents worth.

Yes, I'm with you on the "3-D" call, John. Even though the '68 didn't shine in this particular comparison, it still has a fuller-bodied sound on the D & G strings, especially as you get higher in register. I think that's the main reason it's my go-to... the consistency in warmth for the lowest to highest notes.

I'm late to this too, but I preferred the sound of the '68 - no contest - before I read the results. The CS Rick sounds thin to me, less rounded, less full, more generic. The '68 has some buzzing going on, but sonically I prefer it.

I guess there's much to be said for how key the tone capacitors are to the overall sound, evident here since the '79 doesn't have them.

Re: '68 4001 v '79 4001S sound test
I was on vacation in FL and avoiding Sandy on the way back, so I missed this one.
Voice of dissention (go figure). I thought the first bass (the '68) sounded noticeably better than the second.

Can we have everything louder than everything else?

Interesting, JM. The later votes seem to be leaning that way. Possible forecast for another election that some people may be partaking in?

And in doing a recount with "absentee votes" the results have flip-flopped with the '68 ahead by one vote!
3 for the '68, 2 for the '79, and one neutral comment supporting the virtues of both.
The polls close tomorrow at midnight!

Another late vote for the '68. I knew which it was before reading on and prefer it.

Hmmm...where does the '68 stand on developing alternative energy sources?
Re: '68 4001 v '79 4001S sound test
HA HA! It's very "pro-alternative."

But the '79 uses a battery-powered amp. Don't know if that affects your decision!

Add 1 to the '79 column.walker wrote:HA HA! It's a tight race:
