Duly noted, Mr. Scott!
'68 = 5
'79 = 4

'79 = 4

I think the extra bit of mids on the '79 would sit better in a mix; it would be interesting to hear these tracks with drums and a basic clean guitar or keyboard track as solo'd bass sounds quite different than in an ensemble.

Excellent point. There's a big difference between how I set my amps up for noodling around at home as opposed to how I dial up when in the band situation.jps wrote:I think the extra bit of mids on the '79 would sit better in a mix; it would be interesting to hear these tracks with drums and a basic clean guitar or keyboard track as solo'd bass sounds quite different than in an ensemble.

I realize that I never posted my own vote, which is...
for the '79!
There. And now that it's a tie, I can keep both basses - working together for a better tomorrow!

I usually have my amp set the same way for recording or just playing/rehearsing, but I do mess with the EQ in the mix a bit when it's a full band recording. For the record, neither bass in this sound test was given any extra EQ adjustment at the board.teeder wrote:Excellent point. Mark, the 79 sounded great, but for my tastes your 68 is just a monster. I love the sound of that bass. I agree with you about its tone up the neck. It has a sweet presence up there. Mark

Thanks, Mark! I studied Squire a lot in the quest for tone and discovered along the way just how important the most complimentary amp is. I had so many "not quite there" moments until I started using tube amps & preamps.
