NEW (to me) Bass day! 74 jg 4000!

Post by Ontario_RIC_fan »

Well - you can't have just one can you?

Today I picked up a February 1974 JG 4000, all stock with Grover tuners... One bad patch of buckle rash on the back going through to the maple but other then that a real case queen. I bought it from the second owner who has had it since his last year of high school in 1978. As he is a guitar player mainly it did not see much use.

Sn is NB943. http://www.rickresource.com/register/vi ... p?id=29269. This is the earliest Rickenbacker I have ever owned. :D :D

The jetglo is lovely (it ROCKS) - and all the chrome still glistens.

It was a great deal too.. $1100 plus a tank and half of gas. It was a 4 hour drive each way, so a very busy day of driving!

The bass sounds lovely, although I am not happy with the strings on it... I will want flats on this one.

It has an odd 70s quirk... Even though it is an unbound 4000 - the neck is bound with red dots!

Looking at the register there are two other 4000s with the same feature... Both made the month before in January 1974

This MG one.

and this JG one like mine...

I am greatful for the the register to be able to look up these details!

Here are a few pics...

A lot of driving but all in all a good day!

RIC instrument number 8...

Although I also won an Ebay Auction for a TR25 today as well!

I have NO idea what to do with those skinny stringed things... I'm just a bass player...

Great bass Brian! Congrats! :D

The bound dot-neck is really interesting - I have only seen a couple of others with this feature, and one was a 4008.... I wonder how this came about...

That fretboard is super dark, maybe they were experimenting using different woods and they just decided to bind it.

Interesting thought... Look at the fretboard of the other one in the register..

The fret board does look dark - like maybe they ran out of bubinga?
