Just told the wife that this is my gift suggestion for Christmas. Amazon is great to deal with.

Well, it will be the thought that counts. The book comes (much) later.

Wow. July seems so far away. Is there a low print run? ie recommended to pre-order? Also guessing no hardcover?

Re: The Book is done!
I have not been informed as to the planned print run, but Hal Leonard/Backbeat is the biggest music and music-book publisher in the world. If something sells, they'll make more. There should be no shortages.
The book is "soft cover" with no "hard cover" edition planned. They are going to make it an e-book also, and there was talk about a Japanese edition, but I'm not involved with marketing so I have no idea how or when that will be arranged.
The way publishing a book usually works is that the author writes and selects photos, then basically "sells" the manuscript and photo rights to the publisher who takes it over from there. The publisher usually does all the design and layout, arranges the printing and binding, and then markets the book, distributes the book, and bills the vendors for the product. In the contract, the publisher buys the rights to publish from the author. It is then the publisher's property (the author has been compensated), so it is up to them how to make money on it. In my case, I have skipped some of that process, and the publisher is buying a "completed book" from the author (me) who has already designed and laid out the book. Now all the publisher has to do is the printing, registering for copyright, and marketing. Sales are accounted for, and royalties are sent to the author periodically.
For all the work I have done on this book, it can be argued that I would "make more money" if I had "self published" (which can be done easily nowadays). For a while, I was figuring to do that. But the benefit of having it published by a big-time outfit is that they do all the selling, and they have a huge distribution network. It's possible that I could have received a larger percentage of the purchase price of each book if I had self published, but there's no way I could match the marketing and selling job done by the likes of Hal Leonard/Backbeat Books. So I get a smaller piece of each pie, but there will be a lot more pies!

Congratulations Paul.
Your hard work will pay off I am sure of that.
This book will become THE Rickenbacker bass bible and a great reference book
for all guitar enthusiasts.
Expect a long long print run!
Can you bring it forward a month for my birthday in June?
All the best,
Pete.
