SWEET! Can't wait to get a copy! Congrats on all the hard work finally coming to fruition, Paul.

Too funny about the auto-censor asterisking "Bass." I guess now just be careful not to underline the B in your name unless you want to be known as the ***duke.

The book is under review right now by John Hall and a couple of select Forumites for fact check/copy edit, and final corrections should be made next week. Then it's off to the publisher. Final count, 144 pages with 371 photos (367 color, four B&W), plus the final version of the Rickenbacker Bass Timeline/Family Tree graphic as a two-page foldout. Gotta redesign the back cover to make room for UPC codes, price, publisher's logo, ISBN number, etc.

Whew.

Well, I hope you do better than Richard Smith and Tony Bacon did. I seem to recall them saying they were always hearing variations of "the check's in the mail". It also explains why they've always published their own books themselves since.

I can't say that Hal Leonard/Backbeat Books has always been "speedy," but they quickly sent me the promised advance when I signed the contract. Back when you and I first talked about this book (August 2005) you recommended I go with Hal Leonard for the publisher, and so I did. I can't speak for other author's experiences with them, but mine have been satisfactory. HL appears to be the largest music book publisher in the world(?), so maybe the big ones move more slowly. I should be meeting with my new contact at HL in a couple of weeks; maybe I can get a better read on any "check in the mail" issues. Compensation is not really a big concern for me at this time. I'm more interested in finally making a book on Rick basses available.
