My 4005 fits me. Plain and simple.....I am a large guy and besides it sounding so fantastic, and being so comfortable , it looks right on me (according to my wifey).

Most 4001/3's look like jewelry on me...haha!!

I'm wondering if there is an alternative style of semi-hollow that RIC could produce that would
a) involve fewer costs
b) sell more units to the average bassist, as an alternative to the 4003

realizing this is a total fantasy, what about something like a 330 body with 4003s appointments and 'buckers?

Pros:

330 Body
--> Less wood than a 4005
--> Less sanding surface
--> less raw maple to buy
--> Lighter = more popular
--> established style would appeal to lots of ppl beyond 4005 freaks
--> Less tooling & redesign needed

-Buckers
--> Different sound than 4003 OR 4004 = more options for bass players interested in Ricks

- No binding
--> Cheaper

Cons:

1) Balance - too neck heavy?
2) Existence limited to fantasy world?

John, that idea is brilliant. The 360 is a big body anyway & I bet it would make a superb bass. Slim down the bass neck a bit & I also bet it wouldn't be neck heavy. It could be offered with 'buckers or hi-gains.

Using Hipshot Ultralite tuners would help in reducing neck dive.

I remember that thread where JH mentioned how much he thought it would list for and I thought it was closer to 4K-5K, or maybe that was Peter that said that. They would have to retool for it and that alone would cost a lot of money and I don't think they are in the business to lose money so we would have to pay for it. I saw a band with a mapleglo 4005 on TV a few times and it was the most beautiful bass I've seen. I know they would be expensive, but I'd be in line. I also agree I'd like to have a new one as a player that could handle modern string tension. I've never tried one but have owned a Gibson EB-2 and those are big bodied semi-hollow body basses. You get used to them and the bodies resonate really nicely when you play them.

Even though I have a '67 4005, I'd fork out for a newer model with the newer truss rod system....

There's nothing wrong with my particular bass, the neck is FINE, but it IS almost 38 years old....

I'd go for fireglo with checkered binding, but with the newer, hotter pickups disguised with the toaster covers...how's that sound??

There would be many players interested to purchase a "new" 4005..expecially as soon as a famous musician endorsed it... Okay, Mr Hall said that RIC should invest 100,000$ to put it into production... but if the price is around 4-5K... their effort would be worth I think....

Im just curious as to how many they would need to sell at 4-5k to make any profit worth the focus on such an instrument. there are a lot of hidden costs, such as money lost because they arent making a more popular instrument, so that they can build a few 4005s.
Sorry, but I see this as a modern 325 idea. very few would actually want one, but those who do, want it real bad.

I would assume John's educated guess of 4-5k was more to discourage, then to encourage.

Cool instrument, but lets see some more modern guitars, rather then new old ones.

I've tried to sell my 4005s in the past - my $.02 echo's Josh's comments: there is no 'real' demand for the 4005. A 4005 priced over $3k (much less $4k), even one in nice shape, takes a while to find a home... YMMV.
