How much more for a Montezuma Brown 660/12 than a flamey FG?

Did the A/B play today. Both are terrific guits and really well set up. The main difference is a smidge more relief on the neck on mine (the MB is essentially flat), and the Pyramids v. Ric Strings.

Bottom line: I don't think it's worth the $350 cash differential to do the trade. The MB owner & I agree that it's the sexier guitar (though we both agree my FG is a gorgeous one even w/ the "salmon" element).

But worth that $ just to change color? Probably not, though the MB finish haunts me ... Even if I do a private sale for the FG I think I'd be hard pressed to get more for it than the trade value here (esp. less PayPal fees, shipping cost, etc., though I'd go for a local cash sale first).

Still thinkin' on it...

That would combine the "head" (keep what I have & what works & I like) and "heart" (things being equal or close, I like the MB finish better).

Sort it out later...

I'm guessing that I will/ may have to have a new nut put on the MonteBrown one when I go from the Pyramids (.046 low E, right?) to either the stock Ric strings (042) or the Pick Of The Ricks compressed roundwound set (.042) or even if I try TIs (.044)... should I assume that?

I believe RIC has changed their 12 string set recently to have a .046 low E and they just say Nickel Round Wound on the label now. http://boutique.rickenbacker.com/STRING ... p_680.html

I think that is why POTR is offering the previous Compressed Wound set under their own label.

In my opinion, you can't beat the T-I set from POTR on a Rick 12.

I have never had to change the nut when using any of these string sets.

Thanks, Kevin, that's good to know about the string sets & nut compatibility ... I do want to try the TI set, I like all the TIs I've used on various guits.

Hi Jon,

I can't advise you on which of the two guitars to go with, but I can put in my two cents about Thomastik Infeld flatwounds. They're only sold through Pick of the Ricks in Lindenwold, NJ, and they cost $36.00 a set, but you definitely get what you pay for. Not only do they last a long time (mine have been on my 360/12 for exactly a year, with no loss in tone or signs of wear yet), but they are low tension, play and feel comfortable, and really bring out the chime of those octave strings on a Ric 12. If you're looking for that authentic sixties vibe, look no further.

I have a nice AFG 620. So you can probably guess which one I would lean toward! But then again, the advice of buying the MB for a while and seeing which you like best (if you can afford it!) seems like pretty good advice to me.
