Re: Yep...you just can't solo on a Rick!!!
I've never actaully heard anyone say this. What I usually hear is, "you could solo on a Rick if the neck was wider" or something to that effect. You can, but it does come with some drawbacks and there are other guitars that do it better.
You could play hardcore metal on a Rick if you wanted to, but you wouldn't, because there are other guitars actually designed for that type of music.

Re: Yep...you just can't solo on a Rick!!!
I like the semi-hollow sound of the 300 series and I play solos on my Ricks all the time; the sound is great-alive! I do have taller frets (medium talls) on my two main six string Ricks for easier bends and chord fretting.
There is no reason to ever be bored.

I know this.
I'm strongly considering buying a 620 for evil purposes.
... and a 12ver at that.

This reminds me of the recurring "best bass for metal?" question on that forum where they talk about basses.Grey wrote:You could play hardcore metal on a Rick if you wanted to, but you wouldn't, because there are other guitars actually designed for that type of music.

IMHO, I don't think that 620 is doing Unknown any favors in that video.

I don't believe the "certain guitars are made/better for certain kinds of music" mindset. According to that philosophy, Hendrix should not have played Strat - after all everybody knew (back in 1967), that they were surf guitars. I play lead on my 360 all the time.
Re: Yep...you just can't solo on a Rick!!!
Certain guitars are absolutely better for certain kinds of music. I play lead on my Rick all the time, but frequently pop strings out of the saddles, and have issues with bending notes to the right pitch. If I pick up my Strat, I know that I coould play any kind of music on it without having to fiddle with it. The Rick requires a certain amount of tweaking and setup to get it into the same state. The width of the neck is also a concern for me because I have big hands and that limits my abilitiy to cleanly play complex chord patterns, though i'm currently taking steps to correct that issue.360girl wrote:I don't believe the "certain guitars are made/better for certain kinds of music" mindset. That's also not taking into consideration the various distinct tonal qualities of different instruments that many make them more suitable for one type of music as opposed to the next.

This is too conservative of an attitude for my tastes. It's thinking like this that drives all the generic cookie-cutter bands in all genres; the bands I try to avoid like herpes.Grey wrote:That's also not taking into consideration the various distinct tonal qualities of different instruments that many make them more suitable for one type of music as opposed to the next.

If you want to be different for the sake of being different, by all means. I play a lot of different styles and genres and I use the instrument best suited to the music that I need it for.psychomatthias wrote:This is too conservative of an attitude for my tastes. The best musicians can take any instrument and make it work for whatever they happen to be playing; in the the end, Jaco was right.Grey wrote:If you want to be different for the sake of being different, by all means.
