It is a Shadow with a standard fingerboard. I am guessing you won't see many of these.

I like it like that.
I wish all of the Rick 4000 series bass models had the triangle inlays.

This is fascinating!! I know it's only triangle inlays...but it's another curveball thrown by RIC ...a variation that makes me salivate....

I have always been attracted to the odd Ricks.

I' ve never played a more elegant neck on any bass than my Shadow. Like Pavlov's dog I respond.

The neck on my Shadow is quite different from my other Ricks. It is thinner than normal down near the lower frets but normal up past the 11th fret. This is probably just a function of being handmade.

My initial bid is in. After all of my whining about my issues with the Tuxedo (not happy with the tone, unwilling to swap p/u's, blah, blah, blah) the black and checkerboard binding have suckered me in Image.
Now this one (compared to the Shadow at the Ric Page) has what I feel is acceptable wear and tear for an 18 year old instrument. Makes me happy that I didn't seal the deal on that one today....boy would I be ticked (even if I don't score this one)....it just shows that cool finds are still out there and it is worth it to be selective/nit-picky.
Since this isn't a Shadow maybe Chris "Shadow Master" Pappas will leave it for one of us......or maybe not!

Could this have been a special order? I know there was a day when CB was a special order option but not sure when. I purchased a 620/12 ruby/white around the same time and looking through the catalog I saw that CB was around $60 as an option. I didn't get it on my 620 because I didn't want to wait. I assume it was available for the 4003 as well. Anyway 86-89 so far have the best necks of any Ricks I've played.
a couple of Shadows a Blackstar and an Annie.

It could be a Shadow prototype, it could also be a mod. We really need John Hall's input here.
