strange machines placing in 1987 4003

Machines seems to be too close to the edge of the head for me, but I don't know. What do you think, was it normal in this period?

I think RIC shortened the headstock back then to try and alleviate the chipped cresting wave from all the times the head hit mic stands, cymbals, etc.
