I'd agree about Beatles for Sale. It has a few less-than-stellar songs like "Baby's In Black" ("Its a waltz, remember that"), "Words of Love", "Mr Moonlight" (sometimes voted the worst Beatles song although I think that is unfair), "I Dont Want to Spoil the Party" and "What You're Doing" But AHDN? ... one of their greatest. The weakest song on that album is probably "When I Get Home" but the rest are absolute stand-outs With the Beatles? The weakest song on that album is probably "Little Child" or "Devil in Her Heart" but they still are a good part of a great album. I think that maybe Magical Mystery Tour might also be considered in their second tier of albums, but I know I'll get strong disagreement on that one. The problem with rating any Beatle output (songs or albums) is that the timeframe and scale of musical development is just so huge. For instance, to say that Abbey Road is a "better album" than Please Please Me sort of misses the point entirely. They are both wonderful and historic but come from totally different eras.Electrostring wrote:I think one of the earlier albums, Beatles for Sale, could be their least interesting album. It really comes and goes... With the Beatles and A Hard Day's Night have their weak points as well.

Each album and indeed song is contextually embedded in the life of the listener. The Beatle song "hated" by one is cherished by another. A fascinating discussion would be to define what the features are that are liked or disliked in a song and for what reason. To push the envelope I really enjoy When I Get Home. Anyone else?
Oh yes and what about the albums Beatles VI, Long Tall Sally and Something New.

When I get home. I didn't care much for the song when I was a young Prog-rocker. Now I find myself singing it at work all the time.
Re: Groovy Beatles pictures
Rock, I can relate to what you are saying. I am the same way with the Beatles' country covers such as Act Naturally and even their own composition What Goes On! Something very interesting happens when we are required, indeed forced to perform songs that we may not have enjoeyed at one time. A new appreciation if you will.

I've come to think of Rubber Soul and Revolver as my favorite Beatles albums. There's so much creativity going on between the two of those records.

AHDN is, except for two songs or so, a disappointment, imo. Little Child to me is one of the better tracks on WtB. MMT was the first album I got and definitely in the top of best Beatle albums. The film ruined the perception most people have of the album - their montypythoneque film was cited as reason by Spielberg to go into film making, btw.brammy wrote:But AHDN? ... one of their greatest. I don't hate any Beatle song - I reserve that for other genres which deserve it. Disappointed in tracks is something else. The thing is that if you browse the internet, that in many places there's this "it's Beatles, it's the best there is - period" which simply is bogus. They did pioneer a lot of things, they made some stellar tracks, but not all they did was better than other acts of their time.admin wrote:Each album and indeed song is contextually embedded in the life of the listener. Certain songs or albums will click (or not click) with people for different reasons. For me, the best Beatles LP's are With The Beatles, Revolver and The White Album. There's lots of experimentation and creativity on those albums which I really dig.

Just saw this cool photo on Ebay.
Re: Groovy Beatles pictures
When we think about how many recordings they made from '62-'70 it's wonder there were so many great songs at all. The number of LPs, singles & EPs was unparalleled by the standards back then, forget about nowadays when most artists put out a new album every few years.
It's not surprising that every single track wasn't brilliant, but even their less than brilliant songs were better then a lot of stuff being put out back then.
I'm just glad to have so much to listen to!

I don't hate any Beatle song... amen to that.
I don't even hate "Wild Honey Pie", although I cant for the life of me understand why they would actually put that on an album.

Re: Groovy Beatles pictures
Kent I quite agree that hating a Beatle song is not for me either. There is, at the end of the day, so much randomness with regard to that which was chosen for the albums and that which was not.
There are some songs that I would have thought should have surfaced on the official releases that did not. By way of example, Soldier Of Love would have been a knockout in its day.
As to Wild Honey Pie, a quirky moment during a jam that stuck perhaps? There were a lot of quirky moments that were whimsical and offered a window into the life and times of the Fabs. If I had to guess, and I am, there were fillers thrown in the mix in a tongue and cheek way to satisfy contractual obligations with the record company. Unrealistic deadlines too can often times lead to less than sterling performances.
I think too that the use of While Honey Pie is an example of how fractured the Beatles had become at this point as they were four individuals with recording pojects rather than a tight knit group by this time.
