compared to a 4001, how much could pay a new 4002 in 70/80?

There is a distinction to be made between an asking price and a price obtained. Especially when the vintage market is down the drain.

They (4002's) were about twice as much as a 4001 back when they were new, if you look at the old price lists. Search here and you'll find them.

I'm not very familiar with the 4002. What about this instrument made it worth twice as much as a 4001? I know Rics have never been inexpensive insturments, but what makes this bass stand out so much over the 4001 of its day? And I do mean when both were on the market, not now that they are collectible. Sorry if it's an asinine question, but I've never been able to look into the 4002.

In short, it had two proprietary (?) pickups, a circuit to an XLR jack for direct input to a recording studio board, deluxe-grade maple (often birdseye), different pickup locations, 21-fret ebony fingerboard, checker binding (after it had been deleted from standard models), black outer binding, bound headstock (unique among Rickenbackers), new Schaller tuners, black/white/black laminated pick guard, and just a damn fine-playing instrument!

Over-simplified description: best of both worlds from a Rick bass and a Jazz bass (sounds). The XLR is especially snappy in a good way.

I kick myself every day for not buying a 4002 when they were available new or when they were only about $600 to $800 on ebay. I've played a few 4002's. Dave's (Now Sepp's) was the very best looking/playing/sounding one of all.

I'm hoping my 4002 project plays and sounds half as good as my/Dave's 4002. I'll be one happy man! If I knew then what I know know, I would have owned a 4002 years ago! I know I would not have been able to afford it back in 1982 when I was new bass shopping at Manny's in NYC but it would have given me something to save for.

Speaking of my/Dave's 4002, I need to adjust the neck slightly. I'm a little freaked out since I've never screwed with a bass of this magnitude before.

Same as any other old-style rod 4001. But I understand the trepidation, knowing its value.

Seriously though, when you have the chance, bring it by POTR. It would be worth it for you to have Chris set it up for you.

I've adjusted my 73 4001 with no issues but the fact it's a "special instrument" is screwing with my head. I just need to relax and just stop thinking too much. I know Chris would love to see her again but I got to get past the phobia and just adjust it. She playable but she's acquired a bit more relief now that the humidity has dropped.

Also, you know that if we lived in close proximity to one another, I'd take you up on your offer!
