I have NO idea what to do with those skinny stringed things... I'm just a bass player...

The Rotosound clank sound isn't for me, but this is an extremely cool product. I can't say enough good things about NI/Kontakt and their samples.

I've been a big fan of their product and have used them for years. Kenny Howes and I used Kontakt extensively on our first CD and the new Hautewerk project is no different, although I do play a real bass throughout!

It was a fun project to be involved with and they are indeed a great company with great people.

So, who played the bass for the recordings?

Thomas Skarbye is a highly regarded bassist whose sound design brand has become synonymous with quality and playability. His sampled instruments have become the first choice of top producers and musicians worldwide. To help create this Rickenbacker™-approved instrument, Thomas once again brought in Nils Liberg – the same scripting wizard behind SCARBEE FUNK GUITARIST, ALICIA’S KEYS, and SCARBEE MM BASS.

The Scarbee and Native Instruments partnership have released numerous instrument libraries for the industry-leading sampler KONTAKT and the free KONTAKT PLAYER. With SCARBEE's renowned precision and level of detail, producers can expect a line of premium instruments across the musical spectrum.

Very exciting and quite amazing.
Life, as with music, often requires one to let go of the melody and listen to the rhythm

It's not hardware, but a collection of samples. You need to have the flagship Kontakt sampler software or their free version on your PC or MAC which will load up this collection. Depending on your machine and choice of Digital Audio Workstation product (such as Pro Tools, Sonar, Logic), the sampler will be loaded as a VSTi, AU, or RTAS plugin. Kontakt also works in standalone mode without a DAW.

Most DJ/performance packages (such as Traktor) also include at least one of those interface options. Most of these DO have some type of hardware device or "controller".
