New Old bass day today, a 1968 4001 is on its way to me.

The latest and last, I can pretty much say this with certainty now, is a rather funky looking 1968 Rickenbacker 4001. Some people have a weird sense of aesthetics. The price was very decent for a 1968 so "I had no choice" but to pull the trigger. I have seen carcasses go for the same price for what I paid.

Obviously not a collector dream but it can be restored correctly for a relatively small cost. Pickguard, neck pickup, bridge, keys and bridge pickup are obviously not original. I am not too sure about the bridge pickup surround. I must say I like the abalone inlays.

The actual total price is much higher as I traded the right to purchase this with the missie against the promise of a familly trip to Viet Nam in March... Now that is a win-win deal!

I took a trip to China last summer just for the hell of it. . . . sometimes I wonder what ricks and amps I could have bought instead :)

I see what you mean by "aesthetic choices", :) . Other than the innnnteresting pickguard, this is a fine looking bass! Congrats!

Watch those teeth, Marlin. I'm not sure we've properly sedated the beast . . .

Looks like a later "drop-centre" 4003 pickup ring!

Nice bass though!!!!! Well done!

That is what I initially though too but all the 68 horse shoe pickups mounted in square surrounds I could see were done so in "drop centre" units.

The chance of getting a period correct horse shoe is rather slim so I think I am going to get Lollar horse shoe. A period correct toaster should be easier to find. In the meantime a new toaster will do just fine.

I don't know if it's a trick of the lighting or what, but those are some if the prettiest inlays I have seen on a RIC bass.

I don't think it's a trick, those are abalone shell inlays. Not original, but they do look great!
