NBD 4003 Ruby

Post by JackTheRipper »

After waiting what seems like forever, the FedEx man delivered a 2012 4003 Ruby a week or so ago. Got it from POTR and the color is really nice and I love the wood on the fretboard. This is my 4th rick and not really my favorite. It has been to the RIC factory twice for warranty repair of the binding and it's still not quite right. If I had any confidence that they could fix it correctly, I would send it back again. But they "fixed" it twice and it still isn't right. It's not horrible, and it's certainly nothing that affects playability, and it probably wouldn't even be noticed by anyone but me unless I pointed it out, but it's going to bug me forever. Bummer, I was so excited about having a Ruby, but now it just pisses me off :x

Anyway, here's a pic

Jack,

Sweet color!! Where's the binding issue? Can you post a foto?

The binding problem is between the jack plate and the neck on the lower body. I have pics of the original issue where the binding was very rough and actually "spilled out" into the body a little. But with each warranty repair, the issue has become less visible and now it is only noticeable by touch. When you run your finger over that area, the binding is rough to the touch and has a bit of a roller coaster effect.

Here's a couple of pics of the original issue:

That's just weird. I don't see how the binding could "spill out" into the color unless it's that wide all the way around, and they scrape it to be narrower before they paint it. It would be tricky, but you could wet sand the area with polishing compound and 1000 grit sandpaper to remove the high spot. I'd just leave it though if they've fixed the issue visually. Love the color though!

Hey Jack,

Sorry to hear about this issue. It would definitely bum me out as well. :?

In fact, I go thru a certain amount of buyer's remorse even when every thing's perfect.

I would ask for a replacement, either in RBY or the color of your choice.
Watch those teeth, Marlin. I'm not sure we've properly sedated the beast . . .
