I've been told the hard-and-fast rule is this: there are no hard-and-fast rules!woodyng wrote:Yes,it does seem like no matter what era/vintage of Ric bass you get, anomalies will show up,which i think is part of their charm. That is a sweet bass,Sir! Is that a bone nut? It seems to have an interesting swirley pattern in it. I have deer antler nuts on 2 of my Ricks.

Watch those teeth, Marlin. I'm not sure we've properly sedated the beast . . .

Umm, is that a SINGLE large gauge truss rod I see on that creamy white Rick with binding? Hmmm.

I do not think so. The ambered varnish gives this impression. It feels like Delrin to me.woodyng wrote: Is that a bone nut? It seems to have an interesting swirley pattern in it. I have deer antler nuts on 2 of my Ricks.

Certainly odd enough to make many question its pedigree . . .
As clarification -- the bass I'm referring to is not Jeff's (the subject of this thread). His has dual rods.

hmm...same handwriting as in mine. (OP's bass) I, for one, am very interested in whether or not other MG basses from that era have that handwriting in them.

My March '73 4001 says NAT in the bridge pickup cavity, I thought that was it's name!jayfbv wrote:hmm...same handwriting as in mine. (OP's bass) I, for one, am very interested in whether or not other MG basses from that era have that handwriting in them.
Re: My quite odd 1972 4001S
I just measured my 85 4001FL and 79 4001 at the nut, without the binding they are exactly 1.5", I think this mystery has been solved.
Oh, my 85 4001FL has nat written in the cavity, not sure about the 79.
