'71 4001 in Italy
Here's what I found: http://www.hendrixguitars.com/Ba337.htm
But I have some questions about the pickguard and the bridge PU surround: the first lacks the finger rest holes and seems the V63 one, the other is almost too rectangular...
Any comment?
Tnx

I dont know, the more I look at it Im not real convinced. We need Ted, Sergio, Jeff and a few other genuine experts to testify on this one. The mounting plate for the treble pu also looks funny. Not real sure on the bridge either.
71's are a rare bird. I just havent seen enough of them to tell.
Im sure they want real big $$$ for it, so Id definatley be sure of what I was buying.

"Knowledge is Power"
The only part on this bass that I believe to be non-original is the pickguard; the surround on the treble p/up is consistant with the type used in 1971.
Also, I would say that it's a later production '71 'cause it has a skunk stripe neck, you can see it in the pictures. I suppose it could be an early '72, does any one know the sn#?

Yeah, I too believe the only period-incorrect part on this 4001 to be the pickguard.
Those first-version Grover tuners hint at a 1970/1971 manufacture date, assuming they're original to the bass, that is. As for the treble pu surround with sharp corners, I believe it to be fairly common in 1972 4001 basses. Bridge is original.
Will any of you pick this beauty up?

A Rickenbacker bass is much like the Jaguar E car - perennially ultra-fashionable.
Lars,
The 1st edition Grover closed back tuners were used on the 4001 basses during late '69~late '71. Those are "non-wavy" tuners with longer shafts.
The 2nd edition Grovers were used from about early '72. They are wavy ones whose shafts don't protrude the gear boxes. These were used until as late as the early '80s, although the adoption of the open-gear type took place in the mid '70s.
Yeah I too, think the pickguard is not original but...SOMEONE PLEASE GO GRAB THIS BABY!!!
