squared pickup surround...

Post by beatlefan »

Anyone know when the squared off pickup surround got replaced by the more rounded edged surround?

I have a well-loved March '73 with a square surround. Been curious myself about when/where they used these...

Coincidentally, I also have a pic of it with overdrive pedal in tow 8) ...one I made for a zombie-movie-fanatic friend of mine:

Very nice 4001, but looks like it could use a good setup from what I can tell from that photo.

 That and the knobs look great on your MG

Thanks! I've been gigging that one as received for over a year, action is workable (I like 'em medium-highish), but I do need to spend some quality time on the setup. Just recently pulled rods and setup my long-time '78, did some reconstructive surgery on a collapsing s/8, and the '73 is next in the queue!

The change was around August/September '73. But as usual, there are some holdovers, though I haven't seen them used into '74.

Good eye! Yeah that seems to be the case - that it was a factory anomaly. I tried to reverse the surround, but the holes don't line up...

I've had that bass since the mid-late 80s, and based on the yellowing of the finish I assumed the surround may have always been oriented that way.

Thanks! That's the most action my pool table has seen in years

You have my old JG '73! I'd recognize it anywhere, with all the wear and that sharp-*** surround...most surrounds have either short- or long-radius corners, few are solid 90 degrees like that.

And yes, that bass had a high action when I owned it (not by choice, I just never got around to resetting it).

Thanks, Woody! Yeah - that T-Bird is a '76. Slightly beaten, but not broken.. and it sounds beautiful. The sidewinder pickups are (re)wired in parallel like the 60s and modern TB IVs, and it doesn't have much of that midrange "honk" that sometimes characterizes these. Actually, it sounds very "open" with bell-like mids, and somewhat Ric-ish IMO! That and the JG are my main players now (...and I sometimes take out a '73 Triumph)

Hey Jeff!! Cool - I remember you mentioning this place when I got it from you, but didn't recall your handle here.

I've been using it a lot - really happy with it, and I had wanted a JG like this most of my life. I'll get to that setup one of these days, but its still a joy to play in the meantime.

Really like the look of this one.....This is what I think was originally on my '69, but reversed.

Glad it's working for you! I still have that picture of it on the canvas somewhere in my files...

It looks real nice next to that 8 string, and the MG of course!
