Top Rickenbacker Songs

Post by johnhall »

I'm going to join a local DJ on his local FM radio show this Sunday. He asked me to suggest six "quintessential" Rickenbacker songs to be played during the show.

Can I have some suggestions?

We'll also be playing some Hautewerk tunes, maybe even some off the new CD. You can listen Sunday, Feb. 10th during the 9AM hour at http://www.kx935.com/listen.

Jason Feddy, lead singer and acoustic guitarist for Hautewerk hosts this show called "Full English Breakfast". It gets a bit wild and wooly at times on his show, so I'm going to have to work very hard not to be nonplussed . . .

Interesting challenge with only 6!

My picks:

Mr. Tambourine Man - The Byrds
Roundabout - Yes
A Hard Day's Night - The Beatles
I Can't Explain - The Who
Ace of Spades - Motorhead
Here Comes My Girl - Tom Petty

...my "must haves" would be:

Byrds - MTM
Jam - Going Underground
Who - I Can't Explain

Good luck with the show, John!

Here are my suggestions:

Beatles - I Should Have Known Better. The 12 string jangle is prominent!

Yes - Roundabout. Awesome bass work.

Beatles - If I Needed Someone. 12 string jangle

Beatles - A Little Help From My Friends. Pauls bassline

Beatles - Ticket To Ride. The hook is an all-timer!

The Byrds - Turn Turn Turn

I dunno, I'd probably skip The Beatles altogether (sorry folks), everyone knows they played Ricks. And maybe even some of the rest of the old Rick standards (even though there's tons of good stuff there). Maybe we should include some newer artists that use Ricks such as Muse, Radiohead, Of Mosters and Men, etc.

Don't get me wrong, there's tons of wonderful old classic stuff that was played on Ricks, but hey, Ricks aren't just for old classic rock, they're just as good for today's music as they were back when the classics were the cutting edge...
I have NO idea what to do with those skinny stringed things... I'm just a bass player...

That might be at odds with the idea of a "quintessential" list.

You'd be surprised CJ - the non-musician public wouldn't know a Rickenbacker from a Les Paul....

In addition to the many excellent suggestions, maybe some numbers from the Church? I also note that The Bangles aren't represented yet either...

"Under the Milky Way" by The Church
"If She Knew What She Wanted" by The Bangles
and how's about "Million Miles Away" by The Plimsouls

And another excellant consideration would be Hautewerk live at The Starting Gate (SCARF, August 2011) performing "Stop Start Again" http://dl.dropbox.com/u/37105933/SG-Sto ... 0Again.mp3

I'd certainly include Hard Day's Night; Roundabout; Turn, Turn, Turn; Highway Star; A Girl Like You; Lucy In The Sky With Diamond.

Just about anything by the Byrds from 65-67 will do, I think. It's an embarrassment of riches, isn't it?

John a great question with so many great answer as we have seen here. So as not to duplicate I will add just a few of my favourite classics. Don't forget Blue Rodeo's "Till I Am Myself Again." Also memorable is The Syndicate of Sound's "Little Girl." Finally, how about Paul Revere and the Raiders "Kicks." Don't be fooled by the youtube footage, just listen carefully. :)
Life, as with music, often requires one to let go of the melody and listen to the rhythm
