If I can't find any suitable files it's going to be cheaper for me to buy the correct (gauged) nut files than to take it a guitar tech so I might go down that route.

I wouldn't know who to take it to anyway and there's no guarantee it would be done correctly or to my liking. The store I bought the bass from is a fair distance away so taking it there is not really an option. I would prefer to do it myself anyway, I'm pretty confident in doing things like this and I've set up everything else on the bass myself without any issues really.

Yeah, I'd heard that the nuts are laser cut as well, but the string was definitely binding in the nut slot and a small amount of filing cured it no problem.

$12.95 is a good price for them, here in the UK the same thing is equivalent to about $70 !!!

That was the factory method back in the day.

I bought a set of 6 needle files yesterday for £ 5.99, it included a couple of very usable narrow flat files and a small diameter 'rat-tail' file so I managed to do the job without too much of an issue and am very pleased with the results. :)

Playing down the bottom end of the neck is really nice now, a lot better than it was! I spent a couple of hours playing her this afternoon and didn't want to put her down, in my experience Rics are very special in this respect and there aren't many basses I've owned of other manufacture that I can say this about. 8)
