LOEY !!! LOL is that pic in paul's book ??? should be !!!rickenbrother wrote:I can't disagree with that statement. The tone from the pickup in that position is awesome.aceonbass wrote:That would be especially difficult, requiring the body to be refinished. However, the existing treble pickup is in too good of a position to just eliminate. I'd keep it.
IIRC, it wasn't long prior to taking this picture that this 4001S was brought out of storage and put in the RIC museum. It was very playable, but I don't think it was setup after being taken out of storage. I never plugged it in. I was suffering from a pretty bad gout attack at the time, not very well mobile. I was thrilled enough that JH let me check it out as much as I did. I'm he wouldn't have minded if I'd plugged in in, but with the condition I was in at the time. I didn't want to futz with it or hold it for too long. I may not go down in any official RIC history documentation for anything, but if I do, I don't want it to be because I destroyed the '67 4001S!BAD RONBO, KiLLeR DWaRfS wrote:so...what was the feel and tone ???![]()

Re: Can anyone identify this bass
Nice neck with a sizeable volute; reminded me of the few '68 4001s I have played. Not super slim, but comfy - comparable to the recent 4003 necks IMO. It has big ol' thumpy flatwounds on it - original Maximas I believe (note the silk). The bridge shim is just a slice of pickguard material.BAD RONBO, KiLLeR DWaRfS wrote:so...what was the feel and tone ???

I think he meant 15th fret, of which you are still above!sloop_john_b wrote:"No money above the 5th fret!" - Jason Mendelson

I certainly doubt it, but who knows - "Heartbreaker" sounds pretty gritty.teeder wrote:Awesome, John! Anyone know if there are recordings of Jonesy with that bass?

"Kid in a candy store" does not begin to describe. All credit goes to Ben for being a brilliant tour guide, taking the photos, and letting geeks like Collin and I stand with our mouths agape in the museum for a while.woodyng wrote:Ah,you made the pilgrimage,John, very nice!
