Ric Pickups

Post by billikenn »

bored thinkin again.

Correct me if Im wrong but are the Ric pups wound on a CNC machine?

I was thinkin if they are indeed CNC produced, it would be cool to input some wildcards. Some specific choices that the computer could randomly choose a value for a givin set of constraints.

Say somthing like :
7.4 ohms +- 5%
or
the scatter winding angle +- 20 degrees

I know they have been striving for years to get em all the same, but I think a little variation is cool.

I think your terminology is off a bit. A CNC machine is basically a milling machine that's computer controlled. It could not wind a pickup if it tried.

CNC-computer numerical control. This can be applied to much more than just a mill.

yeah, this is my field of study, well mech engr anyway
we got CNC lathes, routers, sanders, paint sprayers, cutting lasers. Pretty much anything you would imagine could be done betetr with computer numerics.
heck the new lasics (sp?) eye surgery that uses a laser mapping of the eye has a CNC cuttiing laser to shape your eye lens. most people are coming out with better then 20-20 vision.

above that Im pretty sure somewhere along the line I heard that the Ric pups are wound with CNC.

Isn;t the whole point of CNC to produce as little variation as possible so that customers like me don;t complain about inconsistent guitars? I can see the "unique character" argument but I can also see a PR problem if this became policy.

well, it would all depend on your advertising.

As long as you advertise it as such, problems 'should' not arrise. because if you tell the public it is new and better, most people will believe you.

Actually I think the origonal inspiration for CNC was to mass produce cost effectivly. It was just an added bonus that a computer could control a tool more precisely then a skilled laborer, and do it the same every time. without lunch.

In the case of the pups, I would agree with you that if they did so, choosing to go computer controlled was an effort to remove irregularities.
but differences that are programmed in are not irregularities per say. you end up with different pups in each guitar - seemingly that no 2 are identical (depending on your precision and choices) but you dont end up with any bad sounding pups because you simply deney the computer the ability to choose bad sounding perameters.
just limit the range of random choices to what you decide makes a good pickup.

maybe it would have been better to say this idea should be restriced to the C and V series and an option on the others.
