Post by 8mileshigher »

Any RRF Bassists on the hunt looking for a Matte Black finish with Horseshoe and Toaster, etc ... see my post of sightings at TrueTone Music in Santa Monica, California.

For a "rare" instrument, I sure see those Matte Black 4001C64's for sale pretty often.

I've only actually encountered two or three examples of them though (one in person). I have seen the same one listed or linked by multiple people repeated times so maybe that's why you perceive them to be not so rare. I don't think they could be deemed commonplace...

I heard somewhere that there were less than 50 made...but I have no proof to back that story up.

If the paint keeps comming off around the tail piece, im thinking of stripping mine down and using an ebony stain to finish it.. hmmmm. could look cool i think.

I saw a fireglo version in New Orleans in 2007. Was a cool bass, but I wasn't (and still am not) proficient enough at playing bass to even justify getting it.

Lonnie, be advised that maple does not "take" stain very well, and you're libel to come up with a blotchy mess. That's why all the RIC finishes are paint and clear coat, not stains.

I think there may only be a handful in Matte Black. Only two listed in the Register, and one of those two includes photos with a Natural Matte finish.

So I would conclude only one in the Register in Matte Black.

Watch those teeth, Marlin. I'm not sure we've properly sedated the beast . . .
