Re: Remember When?
I was about 14 or 15 and just bought a 66 or 68 Gibson EB-O or a EB-3 dont remember the model number it had 2 P/U's one big one small, anyway my brothers friend ( 6years older) sez to me " I hear you wanna play bass" I said yes I do. he told me to stop by his house one day and he would give me some pointers. a few weeks went by and I needed some help so I went over to his house.
we go into his room and he breaks out the most beautiful think I ever saw. a white 77 Rickenbacker....I knew about Fenders and Gibsons but what the hell is this beast??
he then plugged it into a Taynor mark something amp and WHOA...nothing I had heard sounded like that!
I sold the Gibson and went on a search for a Ric...no luck. I ended up with a 68 P bass that I grew to hate during our 10 year relationship and I sold the SOB for 400 bucks and a gram in 1988..I never really thought about the Ric during the time I had the P bass or after I dumped it....out of sight out of mind I guess
fast forward to 2000 and I walk into a music store in Upstate NY and there on the wall is this beat to **** Ric.
I took it down, plucked one note and walked to toe counter and said order me a new one of these....
I got it 3 moths later, it just turned 13 a few weeks ago
(I should have grabbed the beat up one too but I didnt know at the time how popular and hard to get they were)

Re: Remember When?
Spring 1978, while attending Boulder High School. A friend asked me to drive him down to Melody Music in Englewood, CO to pick up the Rickenbacker 320 he ordered. I only had a Japanese Martin copy at that point, totally unfamiliar with Rickenbackers. The salesman brought it out and opened up the case-couldn't believe how cool the guitar looked. Jetglo finish. Way too tiny for my hands but just right for him. He was a complete John Lennon fan.
That summer I became obsessed with Ricks. The salesman had given me the 1975 catalogue, I spent the summer in Windsor, ON at my grandparents but all I could do is look at that catalogue. Bought 'This is the Modern World' by The Jam, listened to it over and over. That fall, bought a '67 Fireglo Rick 330 at Bobby's Music in Denver.
Life-changing!

Re: Remember When?
Great!.....when you think of all those who regrettably let their Ricks slip away over that many decades.jps wrote:JG? No, so I guess it's not the one!
Ooops,..I was looking at someone else's guitar roster on their signature.....

Re: Remember When?
I traded it plus my Vox Buckingham for a BC RIch Mockingbird at Strings and Things music in Denver, August '79, another music store that no longer exists. Regret it to this day. It was bought by a guy in a band called Define Print. Don't know what he did with it, but we did a gig with them one time and I got to see it again.johnnysain wrote:Where is it?!!!!artisan4 wrote:That fall, bought a '67 Fireglo Rick 330 at Bobby's Music in Denver.

Mine was Fireglo, yes just like this one. The Vox Buckingham was awful but I didn't know about amps back then.jps wrote:JG? No, so I guess it's not the one!

Yours was a different one than mine as the S/N isn't the same.artisan4 wrote:Mine was Fireglo, yes just like this one. The Vox Buckingham was awful but I didn't know about amps back then.jps wrote:JG? No, so I guess it's not the one!
I still have the receipt for mine, it has the serial number, GB-XXX.
BTW, PM sent!
Re: Remember When?
Snuck into a club back about 1977 or so,, there was a KISS cover band playing (of all things), the bass player had a white/black trim 4001. I was hooked.
Actually my first Rick was white with black trim.

The first one I ever saw is the one I own. A friend of mine and I went into a guitar shop across the lake from were I lived in NJ and there it was on the rack. I traded my Kramer and some cash for it.

Re: Remember When?
Back in 1983, as a young and budding popstar (
), I spotted a '76 3001 JG at Al Trombetti's Music in Warwick RI. Picked it up for $175, and used it as my spare bass -- playing it mostly during encores (The Monkeees "Mary Mary"). Sanded it down to a natural finish (whoops), and sold it to my replacement when I washed out of music in the late '80's (one too many Indoor Slalom Festivals).
Fast forward to 2005, when one of my nephews came to work with me and insisted on a high-speed internet connection. He showed me Ebay, explaining anything you could ever want is for sale. On a whim, I said "Punch in RICKENBACKER BASS and see what comes up".
15 Rickenbacker basses (and one mandolin) later, I'm still intrigued. Started playing again in 2007, and even retrieved my 3001 (thanks to my former bandmate and mentor Chorduroy Bob). Pat Wilkins refin'd it in ATG.

Watch those teeth, Marlin. I'm not sure we've properly sedated the beast . . .
