4001 sighting! Roy Orbison...

Post by johnashfield »

I was watching a pbs showing of the Ed Sullivan show. It was "Rock n Roll forever or something.

In any event Roy Obison played "Oh, Pretty Woman" and when they showed the band, the bassist was playing a 4001 in what appeared to be mapleglo!

I also saw that show...was it a 4000 or 4001? I didn't notice...but, Roy's bass player always seemed to play a rick bass and Paul must have seen and admired that bass when the Beatles played with Roy's band in England before they hit it big here and before he ever got his FG from Mr.Hall. And, the clip of Janis Joplin and Big Brother doing "Maybe" was just incredible...no lip syncing (sp) on that night...I hadn't seen that performance since the sunday night that it happened, all those years ago.

I too caught that show. That was pretty neat to see all those performances. Since I'm a little younger, I didn't see any of those when the origianlly aired. I enjoyed seeing John Fogerty and John Lennon with their Ricks as well as Orbison's bass player's Rick.

and if you looked closely, the p bass in the Creedence song had Rick pickups AND Fender p/ups. This was a common mod for CCR. He said that he wanted both sounds out of one bass.

That's wild. Didn't catch that mod...I do love Fortunate Son. We play that one all the time. Seems to be a crowd favorite

I noticed that Fogerty had all the lennon mods on his rick.

The bigsby, and the bridge didn't look like the ric bridge.

I saw the Orbison clip also...it was definitely a 4001, unless they were modding 4000's back then as there were two pickups. Also had the shark fins, so as expected it wasn't the import model. They sure didn't show the bass player much in the clips, though.

I think the Pretty Woman 4001 is in the archives a few times too.
