I don't think so. Wouldn't this be 72 or 73?

Hey, Brian, I believe the pickup on your 4000 is original to it, as by late 1973 all the 'old' 4001 appointments, namely block binding, full-width fretboard inlays, cruddy bridge, toaster pu in the bass position AND transitional high-gain pu in the treble position, had been discontinued.
A Rickenbacker bass is much like the Jaguar E car - perennially ultra-fashionable.
Thanks, that's good news as I'm pretty happy with the sound of the bass as is. I won't bother to look for a "transition" pickup and install it then as I would probably change it back anyway if I didn't like it as well. I'll try to post some pictures later, but as I use the pickup cover I may have to remove it for the pickup to be seen.
