Too many Rickenbackers too little time

I recently got this nice 4000 from 1972 from a first class gentleman.

It was my first venture in the 4000 area. I quite like it. It does reinforce my opinion that 1972 was an exceptional year for Ricenbacker basses. The neck profile is so comfy. To me, that was my prefered aesthetic for the body and headstock.

Mark Walker's RM1999 fascinating adventure pretty much also got me decided into purchasing a 1964 4001 stripped body from another very nice gentleman. Pictures to follow. This one will be worked by someone else than me though...

Nice 4000! A question about these that I've been wondering about for a while. Does the 4000 sound just a like a 4001 if you solo the bridge PU? Or is the cap removed so it sounds like a 4003 with the bridge PU soloed? Or does it sound different and why?

It sounds like you plug your 4001 from the stereo output. That has to do with the loading from the pickups on the pots. A 4001 will never sound like a 4003 even without the 0.00047uf cap as the 4003 pickups are wounde much hotter than the 4001 ones.

The 4000 I have had no 0.00047uf capacitor. I actually do not think the 4000 ever had this capacitor (but I may be absolutely wrong on this one).

Yep! A couple of years ago, I could not imagine a 4001 without binding. Now the simplicity of the "S" has a very big appeal to me.

I think the cap in question is valued at .0047 (point oh oh) -- two zeros, not three. Am I right? I know there are two other caps in there that are valued at .047.

Yes, 0.0047uF (or 4.7nF) NOT 0.00047uF (which would be 470pF)...
