Currently trying hard to convince myself I do not need a 4004...

Yes, you NEED a 4004...
I have NO idea what to do with those skinny stringed things... I'm just a bass player...

My wallet is trying to convince me I don't need to get another one. . . or a 4003. I put on some chromes on the 4004 a week ago and they are breaking in really nicely. . . . so now I need a rounds bass :oops:

I've never played a 4004, but I can say the 4004 pickups are superior to all other Rickenbacker bass pickups, IMO. Total fullness, no need to compress, with all of the clarity of toasters or high gains.
